WEST NEIGHBORHOOD REDEVELOPMENT

When the Maine Medical Center underwent an expansion, there was a high demand for new housing for doctors, nurses, staff and medical students in the neighborhood. Furthermore, when Maine Medical Center negotiated the necessary contract zone, the City of Portland and West End neighborhood activists asked that the hospital limit institutional creep by divesting the various buildings that it had converted from apartments to medical offices in three years. Concurrent with its Crescent Heights project, Developers Collaborative helped revitalize three rental apartment buildings on Brackett, Ellsworth, and Hill Streets to strengthen the neighborhood’s housing stock and provide high-quality workforce housing.
