JOHNSON HALL

After more than a decade of planning, fundraising, and partnership-building, the historic Johnson Hall Opera House completed a transformative $9.1 million renovation of its three-story, two-theater performing arts facility in early 2024.

Developers Collaborative began working with Johnson Hall in 2010 as development consultant, helping guide the project through multiple leadership transitions, evolving master plans, regulatory changes, and shifting funding landscapes. Over the course of the campaign, DC assembled and coordinated a team of professionals and funding partners that ultimately secured support from major public and private investors, including Kennebec Savings Bank, Coastal Enterprises, Inc., the Northern Border Regional Commission, and a federal Congressionally Directed Spending allocation.

The completed renovation preserves and modernizes one of Maine’s historic cultural landmarks while positioning Johnson Hall for future growth. Improvements include a 407-seat theater with enhanced sightlines, balcony seating, and state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and projection systems; expanded lobby and patron amenities; dedicated performer support spaces; and full ADA accessibility throughout the building, including elevator access to all levels.

Today, Johnson Hall stands as a renewed cultural anchor for the region, supporting arts education, community engagement, and live performance for generations to come.
