Across Maine, the need for affordable housing continues to grow, with communities statewide facing a significant shortage of safe, stable, and attainable homes. From rural towns to downtown neighborhoods, too many individuals, families, and older adults are struggling to find housing that meets their needs and allows them to remain connected to the communities they call home.

As a Maine-based affordable housing developer, Developers Collaborative believes housing is about more than buildings. It is about creating communities where people can raise families, access services, remain near employment opportunities, and age with dignity.

Affordable Housing Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that housing is foundational to healthy, resilient communities throughout Maine.

Over the past year, Developers Collaborative has continued advancing affordable and workforce housing projects across the state, serving seniors, families, and individuals with supportive housing needs. From adaptive reuse and historic preservation to new construction and mixed-income communities, each project is rooted in the belief that thoughtful development can create long-term community impact.

In 2025 alone, Developers Collaborative delivered 152 new homes while advancing more than 559 housing units in various stages of development across Maine. The work spans communities of all sizes, helping address housing shortages while supporting local economic stability and long-term community growth.

Today, multiple affordable housing developments remain under construction and in active planning as our team continues collaborating with municipalities, housing agencies, nonprofit organizations, and local partners to help meet Maine’s evolving housing needs.

This work is complex and long-term. Affordable housing developments often take years of planning, partnership, financing, and coordination before construction even begins. Yet the urgency remains clear. Across the state, the shortage of attainable housing continues to impact working households, older adults, employers, and entire communities.

What continues to inspire us is the impact these developments have once completed.

A new apartment can mean stability for a family. It can allow an older adult to remain in the community they love. It can provide proximity to healthcare, transportation, employment, and connection. Strong housing creates stronger communities.

Throughout Maine, housing is not simply about supply, it is about preserving the character, resilience, and future of the communities people call home.

As Affordable Housing Awareness Month reminds us, the work is far from over. But through continued collaboration, thoughtful development, and long-term investment in communities across the state, meaningful progress is possible.

Developers Collaborative remains committed to creating housing that strengthens communities, supports residents, and contributes to a more sustainable future for Maine, with more projects already underway and more still to come.
