The Motherhouse at Baxter Woods is the first building in the multi-phase redevelopment of the Sisters of Mercy site located in Portland’s Deering Center neighborhood. Originally built in 1906, the unique character and history of the property are the main attraction, including grand stairways, stained glass windows, and three story chapel with altar and grand organ. All have been restored and preserved as part of the conversion of the property into 88 apartments for seniors, 66 affordable and 22 market rate. Construction was completed in October of 2018. The Motherhouse has already received a Greater Portland Landmarks Preservation Award and a Maine Preservation Honor Award.
