MIXED USE/COMMUNITY
THOMASTON GREEN
The relocation of the Maine State Prison outside of Thomaston, Maine presented the town with a large, empty site at the edge of its downtown area. From the early stages of the prison's relocation planning, town residents and state officials alike realized that the former prison site would present a opportunity for a marquee smart-growth development that would extend Thomaston's village area to the west.
Developers Collaborative, in partnership with community leaders, constructed a plan to transform the area into a mixed-use community offering commercial buildings along Main Street, a satellite YMCA facility, and condominiums surrounding a central public green that connects Main Street to an overlook of the river.
In July 2010, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to open the public green to the community. Funding from the Riverfront Community Development Bond provided the means for implementing the public trailway, flag post, and trees along the public green.
“In June 2011 Developers Collaborative exited their partnership with the Town in order to help facilitate a more phased approach to the development of the site. DC continues to remain in touch with the Town, offering advice as how to best realize the goals of the Master Plan. Despite this change, DC is proud to have brought over $500,000 in investment and site improvements to Thomaston Green and is confident that ultimately the consensus community vision will be realized.”
